William Royce "Boz" Scaggs (born June 8, 1944) is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. In the early 1960s, he played in the Ardells with Steve Miller and was a member of the Steve Miller Band from 1967 to 1968.
Scaggs launched his solo career in 1969, achieving major success with his 1976 album "Silk Degrees", which reached number two on the Billboard 200 and produced the hit singles "Lido Shuffle" and "Lowdown". He followed this with the platinum-certified albums "Down Two Then Left" and "Middle Man", the latter including the top-40 singles "Breakdown Dead Ahead" and "Jojo".
After a break for most of the 1980s, Scaggs resumed recording and touring in 1988 with the album "Other Roads" and later participated in the New York Rock and Soul Revue. He also co-founded the nightclub Slim’s in San Francisco, which operated until 2020. Scaggs has continued to release albums and tour into the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, with his most recent albums being "Out of the Blues" (2018) and "Detour" (2025).
Scaggs played a role in the formation of the band Toto. For "Silk Degrees", he selected musicians including David Paich, David Hungate, and Jeff Porcaro, who had previously collaborated on projects such as Steely Dan’s "Pretzel Logic". Touring with Scaggs helped solidify their collaboration, and they were subsequently signed as a group by Columbia Records. Paich has noted that Toto’s formation was closely linked to the "Silk Degrees" project. Scaggs has maintained collaborations with these musicians over the decades, including contributions from Paich on six tracks of Scaggs’ 2001 album "Dig".
