Relaunched turn-of-the-Millennium West Coast house imprint Pacific Coast Recordings continues to serve up must-check reissues. This two-tracker first appeared as a promo-only missive on the label's long dormant Pacific Traxx offshoot and comes from peripheral crew member (and regular JT Donaldson collaborator) Chris Penny AKA CPEN. 'Hypno Freak' paddles in the funkier end of the California deep house spectrum, with crisp funk guitar licks, tight electric piano stabs and gritty spoken word vocals rising above a weighty bassline and heavy, locked-in beats. In contrast, 'All Night Long' is a more traditional chunk of lightly tech-tinged peak-time San Francisco deep house with just the right amount of frazzled late-night funk.
