Korn (stylised as KoЯn) is an American nu metal band from Bakersfield, California. It was formed in 1993 by James "Munky" Shaffer, Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu and David Silveria, former members of L.A.P.D. The current line-up consists of Shaffer (guitar), Brian "Head" Welch (guitar), Jonathan Davis (vocals) and Ray Luzier (drums), who replaced Silveria in 2007. Korn is widely regarded as one of the leading bands associated with the development and popularisation of the nu metal genre. The band recorded the demo "Neidermayer's Mind" in 1993, distributing it to record companies and members of the public. Its self-titled debut album, "Korn", was released in 1994, followed by "Life Is Peachy" in 1996. Commercial success increased with "Follow the Leader" (1998) and "Issues" (1999), both of which reached number one on the Billboard 200. Later releases included "Untouchables" (2002), "Take a Look in the Mirror" (2003), "See You on the Other Side" (2005), an untitled album (2007), "Korn III: Remember Who You Are" (2010), "The Path of Totality" (2011), "The Paradigm Shift" (2013), "The Serenity of Suffering" (2016), "The Nothing" (2019) and "Requiem" (2022). The compilation album "Greatest Hits Vol. 1" was released in 2004, marking the end of the band's recording contract with Immortal Records and Epic Records. Korn subsequently signed with Virgin Records before later releasing albums through Roadrunner Records, Prospect Park, Caroline Records and Loma Vista Recordings. As of 2021, Korn had sold more than 40 million records worldwide. Several releases have been certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Fourteen of the band's releases have reached the top ten of the Billboard 200, including eight that reached the top five. Korn has received eight Grammy Award nominations, winning two, and has also won two MTV Video Music Awards. Music videos including "Got the Life" and "Freak on a Leash" received extensive airplay on MTV's "Total Request Live". Before Korn was formed, James Shaffer, Reginald Arvizu and David Silveria performed in the band L.A.P.D., which also included vocalist Richard Morrill. The group released the EP "Love and Peace Dude" in 1989 and the album "Who's Laughing Now" in 1991. After Morrill left, the remaining members briefly performed under the name Creep before recruiting Brian Welch and Jonathan Davis to form Korn. The band's name was derived from the word "corn", with the spelling altered to begin with a "K" and include a reversed "R". The logo was designed by Jonathan Davis. During 1993, Korn rehearsed and recorded at Underground Chicken Sound studio in Huntington Beach, California, where the band attracted attention through live performances and recorded the demo "Neidermayer's Mind". The demo was distributed to record companies and fans and helped establish the band's early sound. "Korn" was recorded with producer Ross Robinson and released in October 1994. The album reached number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and later entered the Billboard 200. It has been credited with influencing the development of nu metal and contributed to Ross Robinson's prominence as a producer. The band supported the album with extensive touring alongside acts including Biohazard, House of Pain, Sick of It All, Deftones and Ozzy Osbourne. Singles released from the album included "Blind", "Need To", "Shoots and Ladders" and "Clown". "Shoots and Ladders" received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance. Released in October 1996, "Life Is Peachy" debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and reached number one in New Zealand. The album was certified double platinum in the United States, platinum in Australia and gold in Canada. Singles included "No Place to Hide", "A.D.I.D.A.S." and "Good God". "No Place to Hide" received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance. In 1997, Korn co-headlined the Lollapalooza tour with Tool. During the same period, the band founded Elementree Records, signing acts including Orgy. Before the release of "Follow the Leader", Korn became involved in a dispute with a Michigan school district after a student was suspended for wearing a Korn T-shirt. The band later withdrew legal action connected to the incident. Korn signed a publishing agreement with Warner Chappell Music in 1998 and entered into a promotional partnership with Puma after discussions with Adidas did not result in an agreement. Before the release of "Follow the Leader", the band produced the internet series "KornTV", documenting the recording process and featuring guest appearances. Released in August 1998, "Follow the Leader" debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Guest performers included Ice Cube, Tre Hardson, Fred Durst and Cheech Marin. The album produced the singles "Got the Life" and "Freak on a Leash", both of which became widely played on MTV's "Total Request Live". "Freak on a Leash" won the Grammy Award for Best Music Video, Short Form, and received a nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance. The album has been certified five-times platinum in the United States and has sold approximately 10 million copies worldwide. "Issues", produced by Brendan O'Brien, was released in November 1999 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Its cover artwork was selected through a fan competition. To promote the album, the band performed it in full at the Apollo Theater in New York, with the concert broadcast on radio stations across the United States. Korn also appeared in the "South Park" episode "Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery", which featured the premiere of the single "Falling Away from Me". Other singles from the album included "Make Me Bad" and "Somebody Someone". "Issues" was certified triple platinum in the United States. "Untouchables" was released in June 2002 and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. The album had leaked online before its release, and members of the band cited music piracy as a factor affecting sales. The singles "Here to Stay" and "Thoughtless" were accompanied by videos directed by the Hughes Brothers. "Here to Stay" won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. "Take a Look in the Mirror" was released in November 2003 and was the first Korn album to be self-produced. The single "Did My Time" was used to promote the film "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life" and became the band's only top 40 entry on the Billboard Hot 100. It also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Metal Performance. The compilation "Greatest Hits Vol. 1" was released in October 2004. It included a cover version of Cameo's "Word Up!" as its lead single and was accompanied by special editions featuring the DVD "Korn: Live at CBGB". In early 2005, guitarist Brian Welch left the band after announcing his conversion to Christianity and discussing his struggles with substance addiction. Following his departure, he released solo material, two autobiographies and formed the band Love and Death. After completing its contract with Sony, Korn signed with Virgin Records. "See You on the Other Side" was released in December 2005, debuting at number three on the Billboard 200. Singles included "Twisted Transistor" and "Coming Undone". The album was certified platinum in the United States. The band promoted the album with the "See You on the Other Side Tour" and revived the "Family Values Tour" in 2006. During the European leg of the tour, Jonathan Davis was diagnosed with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, causing the cancellation of several performances. In late 2006, drummer David Silveria began an indefinite hiatus. Korn recorded an acoustic performance for the MTV series "MTV Unplugged", which was released as "MTV Unplugged: Korn" in 2007 and featured guest appearances by The Cure and Amy Lee. Korn's untitled eighth studio album was released in July 2007 and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. During its recording, drum performances were provided by Terry Bozzio and Brooks Wackerman. Joey Jordison later performed with the band on tour before Ray Luzier became the permanent drummer. Singles included "Evolution", "Hold On" and "Kiss". In 2008, Korn contributed "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" to the compilation "Nightmare Revisited", recorded the song "Haze" for the video game "Haze", and released the concert DVD "Live at Montreux 2004". In 2010, Korn signed with Roadrunner Records and released "Korn III: Remember Who You Are". The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. Singles included "Oildale (Leave Me Alone)" and "Let the Guilt Go". The band later co-headlined the "Music as a Weapon V" tour with Disturbed. "The Path of Totality", released in December 2011, incorporated electronic dance music influences through collaborations with artists including Skrillex, Excision, Noisia, Kill the Noise and 12th Planet. The album reached number ten on the Billboard 200. Singles included "Get Up!" and "Narcissistic Cannibal". It received the Album of the Year award at the 2012 Revolver Golden Gods Awards, and Korn was inducted into the Kerrang! Hall of Fame in 2011. Brian Welch rejoined Korn on stage in 2012 and permanently returned to the band in 2013. "The Paradigm Shift", the band's eleventh studio album, was released in October 2013. It was preceded by the single "Never Never" and followed by "Spike in My Veins". During 2015, the band performed its debut album in full at selected concerts. "The Serenity of Suffering" was released in October 2016 and featured a guest appearance by Corey Taylor. The album was produced by Nick Raskulinecz and promoted by the single "Rotting in Vain". During this period, touring keyboardist Zac Baird departed and was replaced first by Jules Venturini and later by Davey Oberlin. In 2017, Tye Trujillo temporarily replaced Reginald Arvizu on bass during a South American tour. In 2019, Korn released "The Nothing", preceded by the singles "You'll Never Find Me" and "Cold". The band also staged a promotional concert within the multiplayer game "AdventureQuest 3D". In 2020, Korn released a cover of Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" featuring Yelawolf, with proceeds donated to charity. In 2021, Korn presented the online concert event "Monumental" and announced a North American tour. Reginald Arvizu took a hiatus from touring and was replaced by Ra Díaz. During the tour, Jonathan Davis, James Shaffer and Ray Luzier each missed performances after testing positive for COVID-19, with replacement musicians filling in temporarily. Arvizu later stated that he did not expect to return to the band in the near future, and in 2026 said that his decision not to receive a COVID-19 vaccination had contributed to his departure. He described himself as retired from Korn while leaving open the possibility of a future return. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the band began writing material for a new album. "Requiem" was released in February 2022 after being preceded by the singles "Start the Healing" and "Forgotten". The music video for "Worst Is on Its Way" followed later that year. Following the release of "Requiem", the band continued work on new material while maintaining an active touring schedule. In April 2026, Korn released the single "Reward the Scars", its first new song in four years. The track appeared on the soundtrack to the "Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred" expansion. As of 2026, the band's fifteenth studio album remained in development.
